The beginning of something

The is the start of something, but the continuation of something else. I’ve been writing for some time at The Back Porch, a blog I started some time ago. It was intended to be a site for my writing, which included a lot of things related to my work—that is as a church musician and artistic director of a professional ensemble—but also things more personal. I didn’t want it to be explicitly aligned with St. Thomas or the Bach Ensemble, although I knew much of what I write is rooted in my thinking about music.

I decided to host my podcast, BachTalk, at the Back Porch, as I like Substack’s platform. That endeavor was pretty explicitly part of my work, and I started to feel like, at least from a branding standpoint, things were confusing. I liked the idea of the Bach Porch, a southern-inspired image, as a place for reflection and rest. But ultimately I felt like the Back Porch and BachTalk didn’t mesh well.

So I’ve decided to throw my marketing weight behind BachTalk. I’m still likely to include personal writings, essays, and thoughts unrelated to music, but this will be my digital home for output.

I’m starting anew. No posts from my previous effort, although I may migrate a few things if I am particularly proud of them. But for the most part, this is about my future work.
